Site Reliability Engineer (Mid / Senior) - Platform Infrastructure

Elastic is seeking a Site Reliability Engineer (Mid/Senior) to join our Platform Infrastructure team. As a Site Reliability Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and developing tooling that facilitates building, testing, and shipping the Elastic Stack. You will also build and operate production services that power core aspects of the Elastic business, including downloads, Docker registry, maps service, and more.

In this role, you will support internal adoption of the Elastic Stack for software development and analytics use cases. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the smooth operation of our platform and services.

We are looking for a highly skilled engineer with a broad development background and experience in Site-Reliability Engineering. You should have multiple years of hands-on experience administering Linux systems, ideally at scale and in distributed environments. Experience helping operate a SaaS platform is a plus.

You should be comfortable automating production systems collaboratively, treating configuration as code, managing it through version control, and working with tools such as Docker, Terraform, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Salt, Packer, Kubernetes, or your own well-crafted shell scripts.

A drive to automate and monitor everything is essential. If it can be automated, you'll find a way. Experience building reusable software components; open source contributions are a bonus. Comfort with a versioned, Git-based workflow driven by issues and pull requests is required.

Strong Linux fundamentals are a must. You know your way around syscall tracing, TCP internals, init systems (sysvinit/runit/systemd), and aren't afraid to go deep when a problem demands it. A passion for open source, whether through code, mailing lists, documentation, or community participation, is a plus.

Experience thriving in a distributed, asynchronous work environment with strong written communication habits is essential. A genuine appreciation for diverse, globally distributed teams and a collaborative, inclusive approach to getting work done is required.

This role is eligible to participate in Elastic's stock program. Our total rewards package also includes a company-matched 401k with dollar-for-dollar matching up to 6% of eligible earnings, along with a range of other benefits offered with a holistic emphasis on employee well-being.

The typical starting salary range for this role is $130,900-$192,600 USD. In select locations (including Seattle WA, Los Angeles CA, the San Francisco Bay Area CA, and the New York City Metro Area), an alternate range may apply as specified below.

These ranges represent the lowest to highest salary we reasonably and in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the ranges may be modified in the future.

An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

As a distributed company, diversity drives our identity. Whether you’re looking to launch a new career or grow an existing one, Elastic is the type of company where you can balance great work with great life. Your age is only a number. It doesn’t matter if you’re just out of college or your children are; we need you for what you can do.

We strive to have parity of benefits across regions and while regulations differ from place to place, we believe taking care of our people is the right thing to do.

Competitive pay based on the work you do here and not your previous salary

Health coverage for you and your family in many locations

Ability to craft your calendar with flexible locations and schedules for many roles

Generous number of vacation days each year

Increase your impact - We match up to $2000 (or local currency equivalent) for financial donations and service

Up to 40 hours each year to use toward volunteer projects you love

Embracing parenthood with minimum of 16 weeks of parental leave

Since the project, we've provided services to more than 425 local government election websites in 33 states.

1.1.1.1: We released 1.1.1.1 to help fix the foundation of the Internet by building a faster, more secure and privacy-centric public DNS resolver. This is available publicly for everyone to use - it is the first consumer-focused service Cloudflare has ever released.

Here’s the deal - we don’t store client IP addresses never, ever. We will continue to abide by our privacy commitment and ensure that no user data is sold to advertisers or used to target consumers.

Sound like something you’d like to be a part of? We’d love to hear from you!

This position may require access to information protected under U.S. export control laws, including the U.S. Export Administration Regulations. Please note that any offer of employment may be conditioned on your authorization to receive software or technology controlled under these U.S. export laws without sponsorship for an export license.

This role is at-will and OpenAI reserves the right to modify base pay and other compensation components at any time based on individual performance, team or company results, or market conditions.

About the Team:

OpenAI, in close collaboration with our capital partners, is embarking on a journey to build the world’s most advanced AI infrastructure ecosystem. Our Stargate program develops and deploys massive, state-of-the-art data center campuses in partnership with industry leaders today—and through future OpenAI infrastructure projects tomorrow. We design for scale, speed, and reliability, and we need experienced technicians who can translate network blueprints into physical reality.

About the Role:

We are seeking a Senior Data Center Networking Technician who thrives in fast-moving build environments and is eager to roll up their sleeves during active datacenter deployments.

Your first assignment will focus on the physical bring-up of network infrastructure at a large partner-operated campus, collaborating with partner teams and their delivery vendors to achieve agreed performance and reliability targets. As that campus reaches steady state, you will transition to lead network deployment for future OpenAI data center projects, defining standards and guiding implementation across multiple locations.

_Candidates must be able to sit onsite in Abilene, Texas 5 days per week_

In this role you will:

Serve as OpenAI’s technical lead technician during the current campus build, partnering with internal engineers and external contractors on design reviews, installation plans, and acceptance criteria.

Spend significant time on the data-center floor performing inspections, assisting with cable routing/termination when needed, conducting fiber testing (OTDR, power levels, continuity), and resolving installation challenges in real time.

Troubleshoot and optimize cabling routes, patching, and equipment turn-up to ensure clean, reliable handoff to network operations.

Contribute to design discussions and peer reviews for structured cabling and physical network layouts, providing practical field feedback to engineering teams.

Develop repeatable engineering standards, as-built documentation, and deployment playbooks to accelerate future OpenAI campuses

Transition to hands-on design and deployment leadership for upcoming OpenAI data center expansions, owning network physical-layer deployment from design through commissioning.

You might thrive in this role if you:

Have 7+ years of experience in large-scale datacenter network deployment, structured cabling, or physical-layer installation.

Possess deep knowledge of fiber/copper plant design, cabling standards, and hyperscale network best practices.

Excel in field work while applying seasoned technical judgment to solve complex installation and testing issues.

Adapt quickly to changing build conditions and enjoy learning emerging networking technologies.

Communicate clearly with construction, engineering, and operations teams to drive projects to completion.

Are willing to be based at a partner campus during the initial build phase and to travel to future OpenAI data center projects.

Preferred Skills:

Exposure to automation tools (Ansible, SaltStack) or scripting (Python, Shell) for configuration or documentation.

Experience with hyperscale Clos fabrics or large-scale network design.

Familiarity with routing and switching concepts (BGP, OSPF, EVPN/VXLAN) and basic Linux/network troubleshooting.

Industry certifications such as BICSI, CCNA/CCNP, or equivalent.
