Security Risk & Compliance, HIPAA

As part of the Anthropic security department, the compliance team owns understanding security and AI safety expectations, as established by regulators, customers, and industry norms. The compliance team uses this understanding to provide direction to internal partners on the priorities of security and safety requirements they must meet.

This opportunity is unique. Anthropic is expanding HIPAA coverage across its product portfolio , including Claude Code, the Claude Developer Platform, and Claude Cowork , and we need to build the compliance infrastructure to match that expansion. We are looking for someone to own HIPAA compliance operations end-to-end, not just advise on it.

Responsibilities:

Operate Anthropic’s HIPAA compliance review program, executing on HIPAA obligations across the product portfolio.

Run a dedicated HIPAA review track in parallel with the Product Security Review (PSR) process, applying compliance checklist to every in-scope change and recording a complete, auditable disposition before release.

Build and maintain change monitoring mechanisms to catch HIPAA-relevant changes , including default setting changes and incremental updates.

Partner with product and engineering teams upstream to ensure HIPAA considerations are built into first releases rather than addressed as post-launch remediations.

Assess and document PHI data flows, infrastructure boundaries, and control coverage across Anthropic’s cloud-native product environments.

Write, update, and enact HIPAA policies, checklists, deployment guides, and audit evidence packages.

Manage Business Associate Agreement (BAA) obligations and coordinate with legal and external counsel on PHI determination questions and emerging regulatory requirements.

Contribute to Anthropic’s broader compliance program, including adjacent frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001, NIST 800-53) where they intersect with HIPAA obligations.

You may be a good fit if you:

Have 3+ years of progressive experience in compliance roles, including direct ownership of a HIPAA compliance program at a technology company

Have evaluated PHI data flows and infrastructure boundaries in cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and can assess HIPAA exposure without always needing to escalate to legal

Have designed and operated a compliance review mechanism integrated into a product development or release process

Can translate HIPAA technical compliance requirements into actionable workstreams for engineering and product teams

Deliver clear, precise compliance documentation , policies, checklists, audit evidence, deployment guides , for both technical and non-technical audiences

Thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous environments where you’re expected to build processes from scratch and keep them working under rapid product change

Are energized by being the organisational expert who educates and influences rather than only advises

Strong candidates may also:

Have worked in AI/ML or developer-platform companies and understand the unique challenges of PHI exposure in model inference and API environments

Have HITRUST CSF experience or experience mapping HIPAA requirements to HITRUST controls

Engineering Manager, Verticals – Financial Services

About the role

Financial services is one of the most consequential domains for AI—and one of the most demanding. Workflows are complex, data is sensitive, regulatory expectations are real, and the people using these tools are experts who will immediately know if something doesn't work. That's exactly the kind of challenge we're here for.

Anthropic's Verticals team builds AI-powered products purpose-built for the industries where this complexity is highest. We're in early growth, moving fast, and earning the trust of enterprise customers who have seen a lot of vendors promise transformation and deliver demos. This role is about building something that actually changes how financial services teams work—and building the team that can do that sustainably.

Responsibilities

Lead and develop a team of engineers building AI-powered experiences in Excel and PowerPoint for financial services enterprise customers

Own engineering execution end-to-end: project planning, prioritization, delivery quality, team health, and incident response

Partner closely with sales and customer success teams on enterprise deals—understanding customer requirements, participating in key conversations, and translating what you learn into engineering priorities

Work with product and design to shape the roadmap, not just execute against it; you'll have a meaningful voice in what we build and why

Maintain operational reliability on top of third-party platforms (the Microsoft 365 ecosystem), and build the processes that make your team resilient when those dependencies behave unexpectedly

Engage with research and evaluation frameworks—developing intuition for model behavior, understanding evals, and helping the team make sound tradeoffs between capability and reliability

Drive compliance and regulatory initiatives relevant to your customers, including owning the internal engineering work required to meet them

Recruit, onboard, and develop strong engineers; give direct feedback, grow careers, and build a team culture that earns the confidence of enterprise customers

You may be a good fit if you

Are a skilled engineering manager who takes the craft of management seriously: clear feedback, strong 1:1s, hard conversations handled well, and consistent investment in your team's growth

Have experience building products for or within financial services—you understand how these organizations work, what they care about, and why trust and reliability aren't negotiable

Know how to operate in an enterprise sales environment; you're comfortable alongside sales and customer success teams and can hold your own in customer conversations

Have shipped AI-powered products and developed a grounded, practical understanding of what it takes to make them reliable and useful in high-stakes contexts

Are experienced with the operational realities of building on third-party platforms—you've thought through degradation strategies, incident response, and the accountability gaps that come with dependencies you don't control

Thrive in early-growth environments where the product is real but the playbook is still being written

Strong candidates may also have

Deep domain knowledge in financial services—investment banking, asset management, insurance, corporate finance, or similar—whether from working within these institutions or building products for them

Direct experience with compliance frameworks relevant to financial services and healthcare, and a track record of owning or driving compliance initiatives within an engineering organization; familiarity with HIPAA is a meaningful differentiator

Experience managing teams that use AI-assisted coding tools, and a considered perspective on what that means for code review, quality standards, and engineering norms

Exposure to both product-led growth and direct enterprise sales motions, with an understanding of how engineering decisions interact differently with each

Vendor management experience—negotiating with, evaluating, or operationalizing third-party technology providers

Familiarity with model evaluation frameworks and how evals can inform product decisions, not just research ones

Representative projects

Partnering with an investment banking customer to understand their deal documentation workflow, then working with product to translate that into a concrete engineering roadmap

Building an incident response and communication playbook for outages or degradation in Microsoft 365 integrations—and running the post-mortems that drive real improvements

Owning a compliance initiative from scoping through delivery: working with legal and security, defining what engineering needs to build, and getting your team across the line

Collaborating with a cross-functional team to develop a new AI-powered product feature, and working with stakeholders to ensure its successful launch

GRC Automation Engineering Lead

About the Role

We are seeking a GRC Automation Lead to join our GRC organisation and build the technical foundation for how we scale our risk and compliance programs. In this role, you will lead the team that designs and implements automated workflows, data pipelines, and integrations that transform manual compliance processes into scalable engineering systems.

This is a greenfield opportunity to establish the team, architecture, and integrations that will define how we approach governance, risk, and compliance at Anthropic. The core challenge is a data problem: compliance information lives across dozens of systems—cloud infrastructure, identity providers, HR platforms, ticketing tools, code repositories—and your job is to design systems that bring it together, normalise it, and make it actionable.

At Anthropic, you'll also have a unique advantage: the ability to design AI-powered workflows where Claude acts as an extension of your team, handling tasks that would traditionally require additional headcount or manual effort. You'll need ingenuity to identify where agentic AI can accelerate evidence collection, interpret unstructured data, triage compliance gaps, and augment human judgment in risk assessments.

Working closely with Security, IT, and Engineering teams, you'll translate compliance and regulatory requirements into solutions that support audit programs including SOC 2, ISO, HIPAA, and FedRAMP, building systems that combine traditional automation with AI capabilities to achieve scale that wouldn't otherwise be possible.

Responsibilities:

Lead the team that establishes foundational GRC processes and architecture. Design and build automated workflows for risk management and compliance, creating scalable systems that enable continuous monitoring as Anthropic grows.

Build data pipelines that aggregate risk, control, and asset information from across our technology stack. This means solving hard data integration problems: mapping disparate schemas, handling inconsistent data quality, and creating unified views of compliance posture through dashboards and reporting tools.

Inform GRC platform strategy and implementation: in partnership with other programs, evaluate, select, and deploy tooling that meets our compliance requirements.

Translate written policies and compliance requirements into policy-as-code—working with Engineering and Security teams to express requirements as enforceable rules, automated checks, and continuous validation rather than static documents.

Establish feedback loops between policy and implementation: surface where technical controls diverge from written requirements, identify where policies need to evolve based on infrastructure realities, and ensure that compliance requirements are expressed in terms engineers can act on.

Design and deploy agentic AI workflows that extend team capacity, using Claude to automate evidence analysis, monitor control effectiveness, draft audit responses, interpret policy documents, and handle other tasks that require reasoning over unstructured information.

Design and maintain integrations connecting GRC tooling with cloud infrastructure, identity management systems, HRIS platforms, ticketing systems, version control, and CI/CD pipelines—working with engineers to implement integrations that enable automated evidence collection and continuous compliance validation.

Build and lead the GRC Automation function as we scale: hiring team members, establishing practices, and defining the technical roadmap for governance and compliance automation at Anthropic.

You may be a good fit if you:

Have 3-4+ years of experience managing technical individual contributors or systems-focused teams, with a proven track record of building or scaling small teams (2-5 people) in security, compliance, automation, or operations functions.

Are a systems thinker first. You understand how complex environments work: how data flows between systems, where integration points exist, what breaks when systems don't talk to each other. Your strength is designing the right architecture and environment for security monitoring, not necessarily implementing it yourself.

Have 5+ years of experience designing automated workflows, data pipelines, or system integrations, whether through traditional development, low-code platforms, GRC tools, or process automation. We care about your ability to solve integration problems, not your programming language proficiency.

Proficiency to write production level code in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Rust, Go)

Have a relentless focus on data integration: you understand how to pull data from multiple sources, normalise it, join it meaningfully, and surface insights. You're comfortable reasoning about messy, inconsistent data and designing systems that handle edge cases gracefully.

Understand APIs and integration patterns conceptually: REST APIs, webhooks, authentication flows, polling vs. push architectures, and can evaluate systems based on how well they expose data and support automation, even if you're not writing the integration code yourself.

Can work independently with minimal guidance, taking ownership of complex problems from design through implementation while managing ambiguity inherent in early-stage programs.

Have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to break down complex problems into manageable parts and develop creative solutions.

Are able to communicate complex technical ideas to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, with a strong focus on collaboration and teamwork.

Are passionate about staying up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies, with a willingness to learn and adapt to new tools and techniques.

Job Description

OpenAI’s charter calls on us to ensure the benefits of AI are distributed broadly and safely. Our Health AI team focuses on expanding access to high-quality medical expertise and aims to set a high standard for deploying AI responsibly in high-stakes domains.

Improving health will be one of the defining impacts of AGI. Today, millions of people lack access to reliable medical information, and clinicians around the world face increasing time and resource constraints. We are building AI systems that support patients, clinicians, and health workers, while meeting the highest standards for safety, reliability, and privacy.

We are seeking full stack software engineers to help build and scale products used by consumers and care providers globally. You will work closely with product, design, and research teams to ship real systems in a fast-moving, high-impact environment.

Responsibilities

Design and build scalable fullstack systems for consumer and enterprise health.

Own end-to-end feature development—from early design and implementation through deployment, monitoring, and iteration.

Build and maintain data pipelines and services that meet strict privacy, security, and compliance requirements (e.g., HIPAA).

Collaborate closely with researchers and safety teams to integrate reliability, evaluation, and guardrails into production systems.

Debug, optimize, and harden systems to support high availability, performance, and global scale.

Take ownership of ambiguous problems and drive them to practical, high-quality solutions.

Requirements

Are deeply motivated by improving health outcomes and expanding access to medical expertise.

Are a strong engineer who enjoys building durable, well-designed systems.

Have 5+ years of experience writing maintainable, production-quality code.

Can operate with high agency—owning problems end-to-end with minimal supervision.

Enjoy working in fast-moving, cross-functional teams with engineers, product managers, designers, and researchers.

Are comfortable doing unglamorous but essential work when it is needed for the mission (e.g., compliance, data plumbing, reliability).

Stay goal-oriented rather than tool-oriented, choosing what works over what is fashionable.

Are thoughtful about the societal impact of AI and aligned with OpenAI’s mission to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity.

Bonus if you have

Strong product engineering instincts—able to take a rough spec and ship a polished solution.

Entrepreneurial drive or previous experience as a founder.

Prior experience with health-related products.

High-quality public code (e.g., GitHub projects, open-source contributions).

Experience building compliant or regulated products (healthcare, enterprise, finance, or similar).

Experience with distributed systems, backend architecture, or large-scale data pipelines.

About OpenAI

OpenAI is an AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity.
