About the Team:

OpenAI, in close collaboration with our capital partners, is embarking on a journey to build the world’s most advanced AI infrastructure ecosystem. Our Stargate program develops and deploys massive, state-of-the-art data center campuses in partnership with industry leaders such as Oracle today—and through future OpenAI infrastructure projects tomorrow. We design for scale, speed, and reliability, and we need experienced hardware professionals who can help ensure our high-density compute environment operates at peak performance.

About the Role:

The Data Center Incident Program Manager is responsible for designing, operating, and continuously improving the end-to-end incident management lifecycle across mission-critical data center environments. This role owns the “before, during, and after” mechanics of incidents — establishing standards and playbooks in steady state, serving as (or designating) Incident Commander during active events, and driving structured post-incident review and corrective action to closure.

In this role you will:

Define and maintain incident severity levels (SEV definitions), classification criteria, and escalation thresholds.

Establish end-to-end incident response standards: protocols, lifecycle stages (declare → stabilize → mitigate → recover → close), and operating cadence.

Build and maintain governance artifacts: runbooks, war room formats, reporting templates, and decision/communication standards.

Create and operationalize notification trees, stakeholder comms templates (initial, periodic updates, recovery/closure), and executive escalation criteria.

Define clear RACI across Facilities, Hardware Ops, Network, Security, and vendor/partner teams, including handoffs and accountability paths.

Set and manage SLAs/OLAs for acknowledgment, escalation, containment, mitigation, and reporting.

Implement and run incident management tooling (ticketing, paging, logging) and ensure integrations with monitoring and workflow systems.

Establish dashboards and program health metrics to track incident performance and readiness.

Lead readiness activities: tabletop exercises, cross-functional simulations, IC/Deputy training, and a rotating on-call IC bench with certification standards.

Serve as Incident Commander as needed: declare severity, stand up the war room, assign functional leads, and drive structured execution under pressure.

Maintain real-time documentation (decisions, timelines, impact scope) and ensure clear restoration objectives and scope control during active events.

Run post-incident reviews (PIRs), validate timelines, drive structured RCA (e.g., 5 Whys, Fault Tree), and separate root cause vs contributing factors.

Define corrective/preventative actions (CAPAs), assign accountable owners, track to verified closure, and escalate overdue actions.

Publish trend reporting (incident taxonomy, counts by severity, MTTA/MTTR, repeat failure domains) and feed systemic gaps back into design and operations teams.

You might thrive in this role if you:

7+ years in mission-critical infrastructure, data center operations, or reliability engineering

Direct experience leading major incidents (P1/P0 equivalent)

Strong familiarity with facilities systems, hardware operations, or network infrastructure

Demonstrated experience running war rooms and executive updates

Experience conducting root cause analysis and corrective action tracking

Ability to remain calm and decisive under high-pressure conditions

Preferred Skills:

Experience in hyperscale or high-density AI compute environments

Background in facilities commissioning, facility operations, hardware operations, or network reliability

Familiarity with ISO-based quality systems or structured operational documentation frameworks

Experience implementing incident tooling (PagerDuty, ServiceNow, Jira, etc.)

About the Role

We are seeking a senior datacenter hardware operations technician to coordinate physical hardware activities at a large partner-operated campus. In this role you will work side-by-side with Oracle and their delivery teams, helping align OpenAI’s compute requirements with day-to-day hardware work on the ground.
Responsibilities

Serve as OpenAI’s primary on-site hardware contact, collaborating with Oracle teams and vendors to plan and coordinate maintenance, repairs, and lifecycle activities.

Share technical requirements and verify that work performed supports OpenAI’s compute needs and agreed quality targets.

Prepare documentation and runbooks that capture joint best practices and can be applied at additional campuses.

Offer technical guidance and context to partner personnel while respecting their operational ownership.

Requirements

Have 7+ years of experience in datacenter hardware operations, hardware engineering, or large-scale server maintenance, with at least 2 years in a senior or lead technician capacity.

Bring deep knowledge of high-density server hardware, including x86 platforms, GPUs, storage devices, and power/cooling systems.

Excel at diagnosing hardware issues, coordinating complex repairs, and maintaining strong working relationships across organizations.

Are comfortable setting technical expectations and validating outcomes through collaboration, not direct management.

Adapt quickly to changing operational conditions and enjoy solving problems at both the strategic and on-site levels.

About the Team

Security is at the foundation of OpenAI’s mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. Our Security team protects OpenAI’s technology, people, and products. We are technical in what we build but operational in how we do our work, and we are committed to supporting all products and research at OpenAI.

As part of this, our Secure Manufacturing & Stealth (SMS) team is a dedicated function that partners closely with supply chain and operations teams to protect OpenAI’s most sensitive projects.
You will be the single accountable owner for the integrity of OpenAI’s prototype inventory and logistics systems, ensuring that all prototypes are continuously accounted for across locations, teams, and borders. This role requires deep judgment, high trust, and the ability to operate effectively amid ambiguity, urgency, and evolving security requirements.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees. This position requires travel up to ~25% to international vendor and partner locations.

In this role, you will:

Maintain continuous, auditable accountability for all assigned OpenAI hardware prototypes.

Operate and administer a secure prototype library, including inventory systems, physical storage, and check-in / check-out workflows.

Execute access control processes to ensure prototypes are issued only to approved OpenAI personnel with appropriate authorization.

Coordinate secure domestic and international logistics for prototypes, including shipment planning, hand-carry transport, customs coordination, and chain-of-custody documentation.

Support engineering teams through prototype build, testing, iteration, and return cycles.

Perform routine and ad-hoc inventory audits, reconciliations, and discrepancy investigations.

Maintain accurate records, logs, and reporting on prototype status, location, and access history.

Identify operational risks, gaps, or anomalies and escalate clearly and promptly to the Senior Secure Manufacturing and Stealth Specialist.

Support incident response activities related to lost, damaged, or compromised devices.

Execute established security procedures consistently while contributing practical feedback to improve operational processes.

You might thrive in this role if you:

Have 5–8 years of experience in secure logistics, hardware operations, prototype management, physical asset control, or supply chain operations.

Have hands-on experience managing sensitive or high-value hardware across multiple teams or locations.

Possess a strong understanding of security protocols, procedures, and best practices.

Are able to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with multiple stakeholders.

Are able to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
