The Senior Process Engineer is accountable for process safety and engineering integrity across the Centre, ensuring compliance with all legislative, company, and site requirements for Fuel & Low Carbon Technology, Oil & Gas Technology and Wells Fluid teams. Acting as steward for key chemical and process engineering systems, the role sets standards, implements policy, and provides authoritative technical assurance to maintain safe, compliant, and reliable operations.

The role provides site-wide technical leadership for the chemical engineering discipline, leading operational process engineering support to industrial and bench-scale laboratories, and delivering expert process engineering consultancy across the lab.

As the focal point for process design, engineering assurance, and technical risk management, the Senior Process Engineer leads modifications, reliability improvements, and engineering governance across R&D, pilot plant, and operational assets. The role ensures all engineering solutions, projects, and operating strategies align with bp Engineering Technical Practices (ETPs), HSSE requirements, and inherently safer design principles.

Job purpose:

This role plays a key part in the assurance of chemical engineering principles within an R&D business and will provide oversight and verification of the standardised engineering delivery and detailed engineering solutions.

The role will also provide operational line technical query support to the operating teams across our operating sites.

Key responsibilities include:

• Act as steward for chemical engineering standards and systems that ensure process technical integrity, including Management of Change, pressure systems, area classification, and P&ID standards.
• Ensure site process engineering practices and procedures are established, maintained, and compliant with legislative requirements and bp Engineering Technical Practices (ETPs).
• Lead process engineering deliverables for major projects, technical programmes, and complex modifications.
• Provide authoritative technical assurance and challenge of contractor and third-party designs, ensuring full alignment with bp standards and best practice.
• Validate plant and operating data, future operating scenarios, and key design assumptions used in process design.
• Lead development and implementation of chemical engineering systems and procedures appropriate for a research environment, meeting company and regulatory requirements.
• Act as senior Subject Matter Expert for HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA, and Process Safety Reviews (PSRs).
• Lead high-complexity Management of Change activities, ensuring consistent and effective application of process safety methodologies across teams.
• Ensure safe operating limits, relief and protection systems, environmental controls, and inherently safer design principles are embedded in designs.
• Provide technical challenge and assurance across multi-discipline designs, including mechanical, electrical & instrumentation, and research-scale systems.
• Provide engineering governance and technical oversight supporting Technology and Wells Fluids teams.
• Lead process engineering scopes through concept, pre-FEED, and FEED phases.
• Drive assurance of complex and novel modifications, including electrolysers, CO2 systems, fermentation units, advanced chemistry changes, and modular builds.
• Guide operational teams in defining detailed engineering scopes and ensuring high-quality execution.
• Provide senior oversight of equipment selection, materials compatibility, pressure system integrity, and reliability-critical equipment.
• Support the development and management of risk-based maintenance strategies and safety-critical equipment registers.
• Conduct audits and technical assessments to confirm compliance with approved design methods and assurance practices, ensuring deviations are appropriately authorised.
• Mentor Process Engineers and junior staff, building organisational capability and engineering excellence.
• Support the development and deployment of consistent, structured engineering practices across sites.

Job Purpose Mechanical and Project Engineer with capabilities to implement and communicate an operational plan for completing a project, monitor progress and performance against the project plan; resolve operational problems, minimize delays, identify, develop and gather necessary resources to complete the project. Design Mechanical systems, develop schedules, budget and forecasts, select materials, equipment, project staff and contractors. Estimate costs, resources and time required to complete. Direct site building control related activities, through team members and contractors, to meet site needs (e.g. controls upgrade and replacements, programming optimization, standardization, and operations enhancements). Ensures controls architecture consistency between sites. Analyzes technology trends.

Key Accountabilities

• Create scope documents based on unit/department project requirements. Manage and/or support the bidding, evaluation, and selection process of contractors for the design and construction of Facilities and department led projects. Create project budgets and ensure accuracy in company investment prioritization worksheets. Supervise engineers and on-site contractors. Generate project tracking documentation. Determine and prioritize project tasks and develop project schedule and timelines in order to achieve project's final goals on time and within budget.
• Support operation of Facilities mechanical systems including but not limited to centrifugal fans, burners, cooling/heating coils, pumps, centrifugal air compressors, centrifugal chillers, heat exchangers. Manage and maintain documentation for the site Mechanical Systems. Communicate critical updates to site system operators.
• Manage FAC BAS/BMS (Building Automation System/Building Management Systems) specification, design, and operation. Create the planning documents for the periodic budgeting and approval events. Direct and collaborate with the site representatives to ensure consistency and optimal system performance. Present updates and core functionality to site leaders. Manage periodic updates and maintenance of system. Manage submission of yearly planning requirement documentation. Create roles and responsibility documents for quick reference and management of change.
• Support FAC Operations with mechanical/electrical equipment design and specification. Apply analytical and trouble shooting skills to minimize mean time to recovery.
• Train FAC Associates on enhancements to operations related to controls and mechanical/electrical systems. Provide support on an as-needed basis. Ensure reference documentation is available and easily accessed.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology or equivalent combination of education and/or engineering experience
• 3-6 years of experience developing, coordinating and managing mechanical and/or facility related projects
• Intermediate experience with control systems architecture and programming (e.g., EBO/Andover, Tridium, Siemens, Honeywell)

_Other Job-Specific Skills_

• Strong subject matter knowledge of industrial mechanical systems from concept through final design and implementation as well as troubleshooting and repair. Peripheral knowledge of electrical and structural systems related to a manufacturing facility.
• Effective communication and presentation skills, customer focus (building productive relationships), Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and AutoCAD capabilities.
• Effectively communicate ideas to gain consensus from individuals or teams; demonstrate technical proficiency with expertise on some of the topics within area of expertise; balance multiple projects simultaneously; comprehend technical drawings and specifications; plan and execute special projects and reporting; work well in a collaborative environment.
• Ability to balance the wants/needs of the customer department with facilities equipment service team requirements. Knowledge of Honda project flow, budgeting and cost reporting. Project tracking and reporting for PDCA and Nariyuki development.
