Senior Engineering Manager, Design

As the first Engineering Manager embedded in the Upstream Studios organization at GitLab, you'll lead a focused team of Engineers responsible for two foundational surfaces: the Pajamas Design System, which powers the coherence of the entire GitLab product, and docs.gitlab.com, the documentation platform serving millions of GitLab users and contributors worldwide.

This is a rare opportunity to define what engineering leadership looks like inside a design organization. You'll report to the Chief Design Officer and partner closely with Product Design, Technical Writing, Localization, Marketing, Product Management, and Engineering leaders across GitLab.

Critically, the design system is a contribution-based, company-wide platform that engineers across the entire organization depend on and actively participate in. Building those partnerships and making it easier for engineers everywhere to contribute to Pajamas will be central to your success.

You'll be a hands-on technical leader and people manager in equal measure: guiding architecture decisions, shaping contribution workflows, and helping a small, high-impact team do some of the most leveraged work at GitLab.

Responsibilities

Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of engineers, working across the Pajamas Design System and the GitLab documentation site.

Define and build the engineering practice within Upstream Studios–this is a new function and you’ll have real influence over how it takes shape.

Guide architecture and technical decisions for the design system (components, tokens, patterns) and the docs site (performance, reliability, infrastructure, localization).

Help others across the organization understand the strategic value of a well-maintained design system and documentation platform.

Advocate for engineering quality: technical debt, accessibility standards, customer issues, security, and platform reliability.

Collaborate with Product Design and Technical Writing to translate design and content needs into scalable technical solutions

Requirements

Experience leading infrastructure, platform, or development teams, with a track record of building high-performing, values-aligned teams.

Deep expertise in design systems–including design tokens, component architecture, accessibility standards, and contribution models.

Excellent technical background, including professional experience with Git, docs-as-code, Hugo, accessibility, and building and maintaining a design system.

Experience of building and supporting multi-lingual sites and localization workflows at scale.

Professional experience with JavaScript (Vue.js) and familiarity with Elasticsearch, Ruby/Go, AI tools, and continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices.

Strong expertise in running and scaling large, consumer-grade platforms, with a focus on reliability, security, performance, and scalability.

Proficiency in the English language, both written and verbal, sufficient for success in a remote and largely asynchronous work environment.

Demonstrated capacity to clearly and concisely communicate about complex technical, architectural, and/or organizational problems and propose thorough iterative solutions.

Experience with performance and optimization problems and a demonstrated ability to both diagnose and prevent these problems

Comfort working in a highly agile, intensely iterative software development process.

Passion for open source and developer tools, with a commitment to GitLab's values, inclusive culture, and high-performance expectations

About the Team

Upstream Studios is the full-stack experience organization for GitLab. We imagine it, we design it, we document it, we ship it,partnering across product, engineering, and marketing to deliver a continuous deployment of quality. We integrate research, design, frontend engineering, documentation, and brand into a unified delivery pipeline, shaping how customers experience GitLab from first impression to final deployment.

For more information on how we work, see the Upstream Studios section of the GitLab Handbook.

How GitLab Supports Full-Time Employees

Benefits to support your health, finances, and well-being

Flexible Paid Time Off

Please note that we welcome interest from candidates with varying levels of experience; many successful candidates do not meet every single requirement. Additionally, studies have shown that people from underrepresented groups are less likely to apply to a job unless they meet every single qualification. If you're excited about this role, please apply and allow our recruiters to assess your application.

At Webflow, we're building the world's leading AI-native Digital Experience Platform, and we're doing it as a remote-first company built on trust, transparency, and a whole lot of creativity.

This work takes grit, because we move fast, without ever sacrificing craft or quality. Our mission is to bring development superpowers to everyone.
We're looking for a Staff Distributed Systems Engineer

About the role:

Location: Remote-first (United States; BC & ON, Canada)

Full-time

Permanent

Exempt

The cash compensation for this role is tailored to align with the cost of labor in different geographic markets. We've structured the base pay ranges for this role into zones for our geographic markets, and the specific base pay within the range will be determined by the candidate’s geographic location, job-related experience, knowledge, qualifications, and skills.

United States (all figures cited below are in USD and pertain to workers in the United States)

+ Zone A: $187,000 - $289,000 + Zone B: $175,000 - $271,000 + Zone C: $164,000 - $254,000

Canada (figures cited below are in CAD and pertain to workers in ON & BC, Canada)

Application Information:

+ Application deadline: applications accepted on an ongoing basis until position is closed and filled + This posting is for a new position + Reporting to the Senior Manager, Engineering

As a Staff Distributed Systems Engineer, you’ll:

+ Collaborate with exceptional engineers on building systems and services for the world's largest companies. This platform powers millions of production websites and supports massive scale, including over 1% of global Internet traffic and more than 10 billion monthly visits. + Lead architecture for distributed services at scale that synchronize shared state across clients, including clear correctness guarantees (eg: ordering, idempotency, convergence). These services require low latency and high availability, with SLO of 99.99% uptime. + Define concurrency and conflict-resolution semantics for concurrent changes, including trade-offs and constraints. + Design for failure: retries, partial outages, reconnection, and safe recovery paths, with explicit degradation behavior. + Own operational excellence: define SLIs/SLOs, instrument tracing/metrics/logging, and drive reliability improvements through incident learning. + Drive cross-team technical alignment via design docs and decision records; unblock execution across org boundaries. + Raise the bar through design and code reviews, mentoring, and pragmatic standardization that increases leverage. + Deliver maintainable, tested, performant systems and evolve them with a “crawl, walk, run” plan. + Use modern tooling (including agentic coding, debugging and code review) to improve developer velocity and reduce time-to-diagnosis in production. + Participate in engineering citizenship activities such as co-authoring engineering blogs, strengthening and improving our hiring processes, and leading internal hackathon teams. + In addition to the responsibilities outlined above, at Webflow we will support you in identifying where your interests and development opportunities lie and we'll help you incorporate them into your role.

About you:

Requirements:

+ BA/BS degree or equivalent experience + You’ll thrive as a Staff Distributed Systems Engineer, if you have:

At least 7, preferably 10+ years of building and operating large-scale production distributed systems where latency, correctness, and reliability (99.99% uptime) are non-negotiable.

Deep backend systems experience in one or more modern server environments (Java, Go, Rust, Python, Node.js, etc.), with the ability to ramp and adapt quickly in new stacks.

Expertise with distributed systems, concurrency, scaling, and debugging multi-layer systems.

Strong operational judgment: you define SLIs/SLOs, build observability, and improve systems via incidents and feedback loops, not heroics.

Staff behaviors: you lead multi-team initiatives, write appropriate design docs, influence architecture beyond your immediate team, and communicate across the organization.

Ability to make decisions with incomplete information, understand and communicate one-way vs. two-way doors, and move with urgency while keeping critical code operational.

Stay curious and open to growth , actively building fluency in emerging technologies like AI to unlock creativity, accelerate progress, and amplify impact.

Our Core Behaviors:

+ Build lasting customer trust. + Win together. + Reinvent ourselves. + Deliver with speed, quality, and craft.

Benefits:

Remote, together:

+ At Webflow, equality is a core tenet of our culture. We are an Equal Opportunity (EEO)/Veterans/Disability Employer.

About the Role

OpenRouter is an LLM marketplace that lets developers use frontier models in one place. This means shipping frequent model launches and making integration dead simple.

We’re looking for an AI enthusiast to manage model launches and provider onboarding. You’ll help bring new models to market and improve the onboarding process for new providers. This is an ideal role if you love tinkering with AI models, want to develop technical depth, and want to work directly with all of the model labs and providers in the AI ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

Model Launches & Provider Partnerships (~60%)

Run end-to-end launch playbooks: scoping, test plans, latency/quality checks, pricing & quotas, docs, and announcement assets.

Maintain clear versioning and release notes; manage deprecations and migrations.

Tooling for benchmarks, onboarding and internal operations (~40%)

Build internal tools to help speed up the model onboarding process.

Build internal evals to evaluate models and endpoints quickly.

Document internal processes and prime them for automation.

About You

Experience: 2-3 years in a startup, solutions engineering, product ops, or similar.

Technical Skills: Comfortable building demos and scripts; can read API docs and troubleshoot with logs/cURL/Postman. Experience with TypeScript/JavaScript and/or Python. Git-literate. Bonus: familiarity with LangChain/LlamaIndex, benchmarking/evals, or basic cloud/observability.

Mindset: Ambitious owner, fast learner, bias to ship. Passionate about AI and developer experience.

Education: CS/Engineering degree is a plus, not required with demonstrated technical aptitude.

What We Offer

A front-row seat to real-world LLM adoption and access to cutting-edge models.

Growth into specialized or senior roles as we scale.

Define and drive multi-year technical strategy for the Claude API, setting direction across API Core, Capabilities, Knowledge, Distributability, and Agents.

Identify and personally lead the highest-complexity, highest-impact engineering initiatives spanning multiple teams.

Serve as the primary technical decision-maker for major architectural decisions with org-wide scope.

Partner with Research to evaluate and integrate frontier capabilities; work with Inference and Platform for reliable delivery at scale; collaborate with Infrastructure and Safeguards for reliability, security, and responsible deployment.

Mentor and develop Staff-level engineers across the org.

Drive alignment across Product, GTM, Safety, and beyond while proactively identifying and addressing systemic technical risks.

You may be a good fit if you:

Have 12+ years of engineering experience with a clear track record operating at Staff or Senior Staff level.

Have demonstrably shaped technical strategy for large-scale API or distributed systems platforms.

Drive the highest-leverage technical outcomes without formal authority—you lead through influence, quality of thinking, and trust.

Have deep expertise in distributed systems and API architecture, and are effective writing design docs, making architectural calls, and coding in critical paths.

Are highly effective across org boundaries—you build trust with Research, Inference, Infrastructure, Safeguards, and business stakeholders alike.

Education requirements: We require at least a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.

Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.

Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.

We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work.

About the Team

Our Executive Operations team includes Executive Business Partners and Administrative Business Partners, who serve as trusted advisors and collaborators to OpenAIs executives and leaders, focused on strong communication and operational excellence across teams. With a focus on elevating the impact and efficiency of leadership, we anticipate needs, streamline processes, and provide comprehensive support to ensure our executives can focus on high-impact initiatives. We play a pivotal role in driving success and achieving key milestones by cultivating strong relationships and leveraging our deep understanding of business objectives. With a commitment to excellence and a proactive approach, we are dedicated to empowering our leaders and contributing to the overall growth and success of the company.

About the Role:

We are seeking a Senior Executive Business Partner to support our BFO of Corporate and Investor Relations. This role is a force multiplier for a high-visibility function operating at the intersection of finance, strategy, legal, communications, and external stakeholders. You will help build the operating system that enables world-class Investor Relations execution.

This is not a traditional calendar-only role. The bar is operational leadership, sharp judgment, and the ability to run complex, high-stakes workflows with precision, confidentiality, and velocity.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

Own the executive operating rhythm for the BFO of Corporate and IR: master calendar strategy, prioritization, prep, and follow-through across internal and external commitments.

Run Investor Relations engagement logistics end-to-end: investor and analyst meetings, conferences, non-deal roadshows, partner meetings, and high-touch stakeholder engagement. Build tight run-of-show plans, briefing packets, and post-meeting action capture.

Manage high-complexity travel and time-zone choreography, often with short notice and multiple stakeholders, with minimal churn and maximum clarity.

Build and maintain systems: engagement trackers, contact hygiene, recurring cadence docs, briefing templates, meeting notes standards, action logs, and stakeholder mapping. Bring order without adding bureaucracy.

Coordinate sensitive materials and information flows: ensure the right people see the right information at the right time. Protect confidentiality, manage version control, and maintain clean process.

Partner tightly across functions: operate as connective tissue between Corporate, IR, Finance, Legal, and Comms, ensuring alignment on priorities and crisp execution.

What we are looking for (non-negotiables):

6-10+ years of experience supporting multiple leaders or executives in a fast-paced, high-growth, and or technical environment; demonstrated ability to operate with speed, accuracy, and strong judgment.

Senior EBP experience supporting high-accountability leaders in Finance, Corporate Strategy, Investor Relations, Legal, or similarly high-stakes environments.

Proven ability to manage shifting priorities, tight deadlines, and complex calendars with precision and composure; you can triage quickly, push back thoughtfully, and keep things moving without noise.

Demonstrated capability supporting Investor Relations workflows: external stakeholder management, high-touch engagement, and complex travel and time-zone choreography.
