Infrastructure Tax Lead

We are seeking an experienced Infrastructure Tax Lead to join our team. As an Infrastructure Tax Lead, you will be responsible for owning tax end-to-end across our compute infrastructure portfolio, sitting at the point of deal flow, embedded with the Infrastructure team, and coordinating across Legal, Technical Accounting, FP&A, International Tax, Transfer Pricing, Provision, and Incentives.

Key responsibilities include:

Serving as the embedded tax partner to Infrastructure team on deal intake: gathering facts on site specs, counterparty structure, commercial terms, and timing; providing structure review and term-sheet input early enough to shape the deal

Leading Incentives workstream on state and local incentives, sales and use exemptions, and site selection tax input; ensuring incentive commitments and compliance obligations are reflected in the integrated tax position for each site

Partnering with Tax Transactions and Tax Planning teams on lease characterization, entity structure, and contract tax provisions; owning the tax read on lease-versus-purchase, and treatment across a portfolio of non-standard structures

Leading after-tax deal economics: bonus depreciation modeling on large-scale buildouts, NOL utilization, and scenario analysis; partnering with Tax Planning and FP&A to ensure tax assumptions are reflected accurately in deal approval packages

Coordinating with Technical Accounting on lease-versus-purchase treatment, consolidation questions, capitalization policy, and book-tax differences across a range of deal structures

Standing up and maintaining datacenter entity structures across jurisdictions: entity formation, operationalization with local teams, contemporaneous documentation, withholding on cross-border financing, permanent establishment risk, and debt-versus-equity characterization

Partnering with transfer pricing on policy for the infrastructure footprint: intercompany compute pricing, benchmarking, and documentation that will withstand scrutiny as intercompany flows scale

Partnering with the tax provision team on quarterly impact of new structures and deferred tax positions; ensuring there are no surprises between deal close and quarter close

Building and maintaining infrastructure tax playbooks, issue-spotting checklists, and internal processes so the function scales with deal volume rather than linearly with headcount

If you have 12+ years of tax experience with significant exposure to datacenter, REIT, or large-scale real estate tax planning, including meaningful international range, and a JD or CPA, you may be a good fit for this role.

Strong candidates may also have Big 4 or law firm experience in a datacenter, REIT, or infrastructure tax practice, in-house tax experience at a hyperscaler, cloud provider, or large-scale datacenter operator, hands-on transfer pricing experience for intercompany services or compute, including benchmarking and documentation, experience with the owner-operator transition, background in state and local incentives, economic development negotiation, or site selection tax, experience with non-US datacenter tax regimes and cross-border infrastructure structures, and existing relationships with datacenter developers, REIT tax counsel, or Big 4 infrastructure tax teams.

The annual compensation range for this role is $300,000-$370,000 USD.

This role is at-will and OpenAI reserves the right to modify base pay and other compensation components at any time based on individual performance, team or company results, or market conditions.

About the Team

The User Operations team is central to ensuring that our customers' experience with our products is nothing short of exceptional. We resolve complex issues, provide technical guidance, and support customers in maximizing value and adoption from deploying our products. We work closely with Sales, Technical Success, Product, Engineering and others to deliver the best possible experience to our customers at scale. OpenAI's customers represent a range of diverse backgrounds and maturity, from early-stage startups to established global enterprises. Given OpenAI’s already breakneck shipping cadence – and the expectation that it will only accelerate – our ability to architect scalable systems for support readiness, user‑feedback, and broader program delivery is central to our ability to build world-class products and to maintain exceptional support quality.

About the Role

We are seeking a systems‑minded builder who will design, prototype, implement, and iterate on the tooling, data flows, and processes that allows the User Operations team to redefine a modern support organization. Think: automated launch checklists, content and knowledge pipelines, incident detection and evaluators, and other processes that power a User Operations team operating at an unprecedented scale. You’d be building resilient systems, not better slide decks.

We’re looking for people who thrive at the intersection of project management, systems building, data science/data engineering/software engineering, team enablement, and customer advocacy – and enjoy working cross-functionally in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

This role is based in San Francisco, California. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role you will:

Build “Day-1 enabled” workflows; role-tailored playbooks, content auto-diffs from source docs, and other workflows that have been taken for granted in typical Support organizations.

Continuously automate repetitive touchpoints with scripts, agents, and LLM-powered flows; implement governance, observability, evaluation gates, and safe rollback.

Codify detection (windowing, dedupe, thresholds), on-call handoffs, and post-incident learning loops that protect customer experience and SLAs.

Prototype and learn quickly—leveraging ChatGPT, Jupyter notebooks, Retool, and other tools—to prove value before hardening with Engineering.

Stand up data pipelines that capture sentiment, ticket trends, and BPO insights, routing actionable signals back to Product within hours—not weeks.

Identify risks and challenges during tooling rollouts, proposing solutions that safeguard customer experience and service levels.

Continuously automate, replacing every repetitive touchpoint with scripts, agents, or LLM-powered flows.

You might thrive in this role if you:

Have 8+ years of experience in building tools for internal teams, especially within a customer support environment.

Have shipped or maintained tools and automations (dashboards, ETL pipelines, low-code apps) that eliminated manual work and scaled beyond a single team.

Treat ChatGPT & LLMs as default co-developers, rapidly turning natural-language ideas into working code or queries.

Deeply enjoy working cross-functionally and are skilled at building relationships with Product, Engineering, and Operations teams.

Are passionate about customer advocacy and have experience translating customer feedback into strategic product insights.

Possess a strong bias for automation and a distaste for doing low-complexity to otherwise repetitive work consistently.

Thrive in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment where priorities will shift quickly and iterating on your systems will be required.

About the Team

Our Procurement team enables OpenAI to scale responsibly, efficiently, and at speed. We partner closely with stakeholders to accelerate business priorities while maintaining strong commercial rigor, compliance, and operational excellence. We run the high volume sourcing engine across the company, including quick turn negotiations, rapid cycle times, complete diligence packages, consistent contract quality, and strong vendor controls. The Sourcing Delivery team ensures Strategic Sourcing can scale without slowing down the business.

About the Role

As the Sourcing Delivery Lead, you will run the high volume negotiation and contracting engine that keeps the business moving. You will support routine, lower spend, lower complexity commercial work that is often time-sensitive and operationally critical. Your team’s speed, judgment, and customer service will directly unblock teams and keep OpenAI operating at pace.

You will lead the front-end of sourcing engagement as a trusted sourcing partner, guiding requests from intake through negotiation and signature. This is not a transactional, system-processing role. It is a commercial leadership function that pairs operational discipline with strong judgment to deliver fast cycle times, predictable SLAs, and consistently high contract quality at scale.

You will lead a team of Category Coordinators, with a Contract Delivery Lead reporting to you, and you will run the sourcing execution layer from first stakeholder engagement through signature, moving quickly within clear guardrails and escalating cleanly when required. You will serve Strategic Sourcing Leads as a core execution partner, turning strategy into practical playbooks and executing high volume, low risk negotiations so they can stay focused on complex deals and long-term priorities.

You will partner closely with Procurement Operations, who owns the enabling systems, policy, and process infrastructure, while your team owns stakeholder engagement, negotiation execution, and contracting throughput. You will also partner closely with Legal to build and maintain contracting playbooks, a clause library, and approved fallback positions that keep standard agreements moving quickly within guardrails.

Responsibilities

Lead and scale a high-performing sourcing execution organization (Category Coordinators, onsite and nearshore commercial negotiators, plus a Contract Delivery Lead), setting clear standards for speed, quality, and stakeholder experience across high-volume, lower-complexity work.

Design and run the sourcing execution operating model from first stakeholder engagement through negotiation and signature, with crisp decision rights, clear escalation paths, and predictable SLAs.

Own low-risk contracting throughput end to end, including disciplined redlining within guardrails, approvals coordination, signature readiness, and post-signature contract hygiene (accurate filing, key term capture, auditability).

Apply AI intentionally to increase speed and consistency, embedding AI-assisted approaches into workflows (intake triage support, drafting and clause analysis, redline acceleration, diligence checklists) while maintaining confidentiality, controls, and contract quality.

Co-build with Legal the enablement layer that keeps low risk deals moving, including playbooks, clause library, approved fallback positions, and escalation thresholds that ensure compliance and speed.

Requirements

We’re looking for a leader who has built and run high volume procurement execution and contracting teams in fast-scaling environments, and who brings a high bar for speed, quality, and stakeholder experience.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees. Travel is expected up to twice per year to support distributed delivery operations.
