Senior Quantum Engineer

We are looking for a Senior Quantum Engineer with expertise in superconducting qubits to join our hardware R&D team.

This role is for someone who wants to work on technically difficult problems that directly shape a quantum hardware platform. You will not be optimising within a fixed roadmap, you will help define it.

You will design, execute, and interpret experiments that push the performance and scalability of superconducting qubit systems. You will develop new gate schemes, explore advanced control protocols, and test architectural ideas that can influence platform-level decisions.

We operate in direct competition with the best-funded and most established teams in the world. We are looking for someone who finds that motivating.

You will have a high degree of autonomy and ownership while working in a collaborative environment. If you have a strong technical hypothesis, you will be expected to test it rigorously and defend it with data. Strong ideas move quickly through experimental validation.

Collaborate across device, fabrication, and control teams to translate ideas into hardware progress.

Strong background in gate design, pulse engineering, and decoherence mechanisms.

Demonstrated ability to independently lead complex experimental efforts from concept to validated result.

Intellectual independence, technical courage, and the ability to defend ideas with evidence.

Motivation to compete at the highest technical level in the field.

This position is best suited for someone who wants visible impact, real ownership, and the opportunity to help shape the direction of a quantum hardware platform, not just contribute to a small piece of it.

Additional Information

You will lead a range of experimental efforts to characterise and improve measurement protocols, signal chains, amplifiers, and device layouts.

In collaboration with an interdisciplinary group of engineers in theory, hardware, and chip design, you will advance the speed and fidelity of readout and reset in Rigetti Computing's quantum computing systems to fulfil its ambitious roadmap toward fault tolerance.

Quantum Engineer

As a Quantum Engineer in the quantum integrated circuit design team, you will drive systematic improvements to Rigetti Computing's quantum processors through modeling and design. This involves contributing to our full-wave electromagnetic simulation workflows and using it to model the performance of superconducting circuits.

Drawing from your expertise in circuit Quantum Electrodynamics and full-wave radio-frequency engineering, from fundamental theory through practical application, you will identify and implement improvements to the integrated circuit layout to mitigate loss and crosstalk channels. You will lay out and design microwave multi-qubit circuits for fabrication and develop next-generation quantum processors.

Key responsibilities include designing, laying out, and simulating superconducting microwave integrated circuits for quantum processors, with a focus on optimal on-chip signal delivery (routing, filtering, multiplexing, etc…). You will also simulate the full-wave electromagnetic performance of quantum processors (eigenmode & driven analyses) using commercial finite element software, engineering the mode profile of resonant structures and the coupling between these resonant structures and on-chip feedlines to optimize device performance.

Engagement with quantum engineers to identify and optimize Hamiltonian parameters for our R&D test devices and deployed quantum processors is also required. Additionally, you will map between target quantum Hamiltonians and integrated circuit layouts using internal python software libraries to construct and diagonalize the quantum Hamiltonian.

Interpretation of simulation and experimental results to identify and mitigate loss and crosstalk channels, or other undesirable microwave properties of the circuit, is essential. Collaboration with fabrication and experimental teams to develop novel processor architectures is also expected.

A PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or the equivalent experience in industry and 3+ years of industry experience is preferred. Strong background in the theory and application of circuit Quantum Electrodynamics to the design of superconducting qubit based quantum processors is also required.

Data Scientist

You will play a critical role in our design, fabrication, and test flywheel as a Data Scientist in the quantum integrated circuit design team. Through comprehensive and robust analysis of large, ever-expanding datasets obtained from existing quantum processors and test devices, you will extract relevant empirical calibrations to improve the accuracy of our processor design and the performance of subsequent generations of processors.

You will develop software infrastructure to streamline and automate these analyses to accelerate learning cycles. Finally, you will collaborate closely with researchers and engineers across Rigetti to monitor and improve fabrication yield, and improve the models and infrastructure used to predict processor performance from foundry metrology data.

Key responsibilities include designing and implementing industry-grade software infrastructure in Python to streamline feedback from measurement to the integrated circuit design team, identifying correlations between fabrication metrology data and processor performance through the analysis of empirical datasets, and utilizing techniques and best practices in statistical analysis and machine learning to accurately calibrate various processor design parameters.

Required qualifications include an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, 6+ years of experience in data science and statistical analysis in a scientific field, and programming skills in Python for scientific applications.
