Application Security Engineer

At OakNorth, we're on a mission to empower ambitious businesses and the communities they serve.

The Application Security Engineer is a hands-on, full-stack security role focused on fixing the hardest application and AI security problems , particularly those that cross team boundaries or involve architecture, authentication, and authorisation that automation cannot yet safely resolve.

You will take remediation load away from engineering teams so they can stay focused on delivery, working closely with the teams that detect, prioritise, and track vulnerabilities.

Responsibilities:

Fix complex application security vulnerabilities directly, including architectural weaknesses and issues in legacy technology that automated remediation cannot yet handle safely.

Lead remediation of problems that cross team and system boundaries, coordinating changes across multiple owners and services and seeing them through to resolution.

Resolve authentication and authorisation weaknesses, including identity, access control, session and token handling, service-to-service trust and permission models.

Act as a dedicated delivery vehicle for security remediation, reducing the fix burden on engineering teams so they can focus on product delivery.

Interpret the output of security tooling (e.g., SAST, DAST, SCA, secrets, container and IaC scanning), validate findings, identify root causes and implement the right fix rather than only triaging.

Secure agentic and AI-enabled systems, assessing and mitigating risks such as those in the OWASP Top 10 for Agentic Applications, including prompt injection, excessive agent permissions, tool misuse, insecure agent-to-agent communication and unsafe handling of agent outputs.

Contribute to the development of our internal coding agent platforms, including remediation agents, by supplying specialist fixes, remediation patterns, evaluation cases and feedback on where agents succeed or fail.

Define and build guardrails for agent-generated and human-written changes (e.g., least-privilege agent access, human approval points, secure defaults, shared libraries, pipeline checks and policy-as-code) so that changes are safe and vulnerabilities do not recur.

Build and secure GitHub workflows and release pipelines, including GitHub Actions hardening, secrets and token handling, branch protection, dependency and supply chain controls, and security gates in CI/CD.

Plan and deliver higher-risk changes safely, including testing, peer review, rollout and rollback approaches, in partnership with the teams that own the systems.

Work with the teams that detect, prioritise and track vulnerabilities to take prioritised findings through to remediation, and identify recurring fix types that can be automated safely.

Document remediation approaches, share knowledge and coach engineers on secure design, secure coding and the safe use of AI coding agents.

Report on remediation progress, including backlog reduction, SLA performance and risk reduction, and provide evidence to support audit and regulatory requirements.

Requirements:

Full stack engineering experience across front end, back end and APIs, with proficiency in one or more languages (e.g., Java, Python, C#, JavaScript/TypeScript) and the ability to work in unfamiliar and legacy codebases.

Strong hands-on experience with GitHub (pull requests, code review, branch protection, code scanning) and GitHub Actions, including building and securing release pipelines.

Working knowledge of cloud platforms, containers and infrastructure as code.

Ability to review code, find vulnerabilities and implement practical, correct fixes.

Strong application security knowledge, including the OWASP Top 10 and common vulnerability classes such as injection, broken access control, insecure deserialization and cryptographic weaknesses.

Deep understanding of authentication and authorisation, including OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, JWT and session handling, RBAC/ABAC models and service-to-service identity.

Hands-on experience interpreting application security tooling output (SAST, DAST, SCA, secrets, container and IaC scanning), distinguishing true and false positives and finding root cause.

Understanding of CI/CD and software supply chain security, including GitHub Actions risks such as untrusted input, over-privileged tokens and third-party action pinning.

Day-to-day experience using coding agents such as Claude to write, review and fix code, with sound judgement on where they are reliable and where they are not.

Knowledge of and informed opinions on the OWASP Top 10 for Agentic Applications and related AI security risks, including prompt injection, tool and permission abuse, data leakage and agent identity.

Ability to design guardrails, permission boundaries and evaluation approaches for AI agents and agent-generated changes.

Ability to turn manual fixes into repeatable patterns and test cases that agent platforms can use.

Experience fixing architectural and design-level security issues, and making safe changes in systems with limited tests, documentation or clear ownership.

Ability to plan and deliver changes that span multiple teams and services, managing dependencies and risk.

Sound judgement on testing, rollout and rollback for higher-risk changes.

Ability to work as a trusted partner to engineering teams, explaining why a fix is needed and making it easy to adopt.

Influence without direct authority across teams that own the affected systems, including stakeholders in different locations and time zones.

Clear written and verbal communication, including documentation and progress reporting.

Benefits:

Health & Protection: Medical cover for you, your family & parents; life and accidental cover at a multiple of your salary

Wellbeing: Annual health check-ups, online doctor consultations, pharmacy discounts, nutritionist support, and an Employee Assistance Programme , all sponsored

Flexible Benefits: Tax-efficient allowances for internet, fuel, meals, leave & travel, and NPS

Growth: Professional certification support, learning & development opportunities, childcare benefits, and paid volunteering days

Our Workplace: Modern central offices, weekly business updates, team events, and great coffee , we work hard to build a culture worth showing up for

Own day-to-day deal workstreams, coordinating diligence, analysis, credit papers, committee materials, term sheets, legal documentation and completion requirements.

Present clear analysis and recommendations to senior stakeholders, and contribute to credit discussions with well-reasoned judgement.

Build trusted relationships with borrowers, advisers and intermediaries, and contribute to developing a high-quality pipeline of opportunities.

Review work and share your expertise with junior colleagues, helping strengthen the quality and consistency of the team’s analysis and execution.

Work closely with colleagues across debt finance, credit, legal and portfolio teams to support a smooth transition from origination through completion and ongoing monitoring.

Requirements

Strong experience in accountancy, commercial lending, debt finance or a closely related area, with the ability to take ownership of complex transaction workstreams.

Relevant exposure to businesses and their financing needs

Excellent financial analysis and modelling skills, including cash-flow assessment, debt sizing and downside analysis.

Sound credit judgement and the ability to identify the risks that matter, test assumptions and explain your conclusions clearly.

Experience preparing or reviewing credit papers, committee materials, term sheets or transaction documentation.

Confidence managing multiple stakeholders and workstreams, keeping transactions moving while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

Clear written and verbal communication, with the confidence to explain complex analysis to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

A collaborative, low-ego approach and a genuine interest in supporting the development of colleagues around you.

Particularly useful experience

Lending

Working-capital

What you can expect

Co-Head of Credit Risk – Real Estate

We are looking for a Co-Head of Credit Risk – Real Estate to help grow our real estate lending businesses working alongside our Co-Head of Credit Risk – Trading Business. Together, you will provide senior credit leadership across our real estate and trading business lending, each bringing deep expertise in your area.

Based in London, you will help shape the real estate deals we do, the people we develop and how we work across the UK market, while keeping sound credit judgement at the heart of every decision.

This is a role for someone who wants to build, not just oversee. You will work closely with our Debt Finance Originators to understand customers’ ambitions and find the right structure for their transactions, making and sanctioning credit decisions and bringing an independent view to Credit Risk Committee.

The opportunity goes beyond individual deals. You will lead our Real Estate Credit Risk teams, oversee portfolio risk and help shape how we approach real estate credit as we grow internationally.

We also want your ideas. How could AI improve our analysis? Where could better data help us spot risk sooner? What should we stop doing so the team can spend more time on the decisions that matter? You will help turn those ideas into practical changes.

Shape real estate credit across OakNorth

Work with senior Lending and Credit Risk colleagues to support growth across all markets, with clear views on the opportunities we should pursue and the risks we should take.

Help shape our approach to real estate credit, combining consistent underwriting standards with an understanding of local markets, deal structures and regulation.

Stay close to transactions and the portfolio, and build the team’s capability as the business grows.

Credit decisions and sanctioning

Make and sanction decisions on new transactions, amendments and other material credit matters within your delegated authority.

Assess deal structure, leverage, cash flow, security, sponsor strength and downside risk.

Work with Debt Finance Originators from the early stages of a deal, helping shape terms and structures that work for the customer and meet our risk appetite. Provide clear, timely credit feedback and be direct when a transaction is not right for us.

Take responsibility for complex or higher-risk cases, including when information is incomplete or circumstances are changing.

Record decisions clearly, with a sound rationale.

Credit Risk Committee

Play an active role in Credit Risk Committee and chair where appropriate, bringing a solutions-focused, commercial mindset and independent credit judgement to UK real estate decisions. Help shape our real estate credit appetite, find workable structures for good lending opportunities and keep decisions moving at pace without compromising credit standards.

Challenge the key assumptions and risks, including how individual deals affect portfolio concentrations.

Bring a clear view and be prepared to challenge senior colleagues.

Build and lead the team

Lead our Real Estate Credit Risk teams, giving people clear responsibility and expecting high standards.

Develop credit professionals who can think for themselves, form a view and stand behind a decision.

Coach colleagues through complex transactions and give future leaders the experience to take on more responsibility.

Bring the teams together across markets, and recruit and retain the people we need for our next stage of growth.

Use AI and data to improve credit work

AI and technology should be part of how we do credit work, not a separate project. You will help the team:

spend less time gathering information and preparing credit analysis and committee papers

use data to identify portfolio risks earlier

automate repetitive tasks and test tools that improve the quality and speed of our work

You do not need a technical background. We do expect curiosity, a willingness to test new approaches and the judgement to know where they add value.

What we are looking for

You will have substantial experience underwriting and sanctioning complex commercial real estate transactions. Direct experience of making credit decisions is essential; policy or governance experience alone is not enough.

You will bring:

deep knowledge of real estate lending across different asset classes and transaction types

sound judgement on deal structure, sponsors, security, cash flow and downside risk, alongside an understanding of portfolio exposures

experience on senior Credit Risk Committees and the confidence to challenge senior Lending colleagues

a track record of leading and developing credit teams

Experience in UK or across more than one lending market, would be an advantage.

Working at OakNorth

We were founded by entrepreneurs, for entrepreneurs. Our customers have ambitions for their businesses, and we look for ways to help them get there. That takes curiosity, commercial understanding and the willingness to look beyond the obvious answer.

You should enjoy that kind of work: getting into a complex deal, challenging assumptions and finding a structure that others may have missed. Just as importantly, you need the independence to say no when the risk is not right.

We move quickly and expect people to take ownership. You will have room to put ideas into practice, challenge established ways of working and develop your team. In return, we expect clear decisions, disciplined risk judgement and responsibility for the outcome.

If you want to help grow a lending business, develop strong credit leaders and change how credit work gets done, this is an opportunity to do all three.

Benefits & Perks

Equity , we want everyone to have a stake in the business so our interests are aligned

25 days holiday plus personalised benefits , opt in to what matters to you

Subsidised private medical insurance with Bupa

Enhanced maternity and paternity leave

Wellbeing and social events, plus in-house Barista Bar in the London office

Volunteering time off to support causes that matter to you

Salary sacrifice schemes , cycle to work, nursery, gym, and electric car scheme

Responsibilities:

Design simple, resilient, scalable event-driven systems: you build it, you run it.

Break complex problems into incremental, shippable steps with clear domain boundaries.

Shape platform-wide architecture with an eye on wider business impact.

Coach and mentor engineers by example.

Use GenAI to move faster and decide better and help set the direction for how it’s embedded across the organisation.

Collaborate - We work in cross-functional, mission driven, autonomous squads that gel over time. We pair program to work better through shared experience and knowledge.

Focus on outcomes over outputs - Solving a problem for users that translates to business results is our goal. Measurements focused on that goal help us to understand if we are succeeding.

Practice continuous improvement - We optimise for feedback now, rather than presume what might be needed in the future and introduce complexity before it will be used. This means we learn faster. We share learnings in blame-free formats, so that we do not repeat things that have failed, but still have confidence to innovate.

Seek to understand our users - We constantly seek understanding from data and conversations to better serve our users' needs, taking an active part in research to hear from them directly and regularly.

Embrace and enable continuous deployment - Seamless delivery of changes into an environment - without manual intervention - is essential for us to ensure that we are highly productive; consider resiliency; and practice security by design.

Test outside-in, test first - TDD keeps us confident in moving fast and deploying regularly. We want to solve user problems, and so we test with that mindset - writing scenarios first, then considering our solution; coupling tests to behaviour, rather than implementation.

You build it, you run it - We embrace DevOps culture and end-to-end ownership of products and features. Every engineer, regardless of their role, can lead delivery of features from start to finish.

Be cloud native - We leverage automation and hosted services to deliver resilient, secure services quickly and consistently.

Sales Enablement Lead

OakNorth's lending business is scaling across the UK and US, and we need a Sales Enablement Lead to join our growing Commercial Strategy team.

Working within Debt Finance, you will own the sales enablement engine – understanding what best in class looks like across our end to end deal processes and translating this into playbooks, materials and training to support every Debt Finance Director in reaching their full potential.

This is a hands-on, build-from-scratch mandate for someone who can earn credibility with senior dealmakers and translate how they operate into practical tools.

Responsibilities

Work hand in hand with our Debt Finance Directors to understand what good looks like, and any gaps in our existing deal processes

Codify “what good looks like” and build our sales enablement materials, optimising by stakeholder, segment and product

Develop sales playbooks on how we position OakNorth to different stakeholder groups

Build battlecards and objection-handling guides and understand blockers at different deal stages and how to address these

Partner with marketing to develop sharp, consistent sales materials

Own onboarding for new DFDs and get new joiners productive faster

Identify coaching gaps and support delivery alongside our top originators

The Profile

We care more about how you think than where you've worked. You may come from commercial lending, debt advisory, banking, consulting or sales enablement , what matters is credibility with dealmakers and a talent for turning tacit expertise into usable tools.

You will bring:

5–8+ years' experience, with enough commercial and credit fluency to follow a complex lending deal and hold your own with senior originators

Sharp synthesis and writing , the ability to watch how someone sells and distil it into something others can use

Strong systems thinking and the instinct to build structure where none exists

Low ego and high curiosity , comfortable learning from others before telling them how it's done

A bias for action and comfort building without a playbook

Benefits & Perks

25 days holiday

Personalised benefits , opt-in to what matters to you
