Android Engineer (12-Month Fixed-Term)

At Engine by Starling, we are looking for an Android Engineer to join our team. As an Android Engineer, you will contribute to our award-winning Android app and internal tooling, build new features and products from scratch, share your knowledge with others, and own your projects.

We are a collaborative and open culture, and you will find support from your team and across the business. We value people who are engaged and caring about customers, the code they write, and the contribution they make to banking worldwide.

As an Android Engineer, you will be empowered to make decisions necessary for the project and provide insight to the team leads. You will work closely with other Android engineers with a variety of experience levels and interests, helping us improve and develop our Android app, CI automations, and tooling.

Requirements:

As an Android engineer, you will report to and catch-up regularly with a mobile lead engineer who will support you on your journey in Engine.

We have a strong collaborative and open culture here so you will find support outside your team too.

As a fully digital bank, we are looking for engineers that are able to understand and prioritise security when implementing new features, fixing bugs or making technical improvements, across all the layers.

Our team is designing, building and releasing new screens every day, for this reason we are interested in people with a particular focus on Accessibility along with writing clean and maintainable code.

The way to thrive and shine within Engine is to be a self-driven individual and be able to take full ownership of everything around you: From building the code, shipping and maintaining it, to sharing knowledge with your colleagues and making sure all processes are efficient and productive to deliver the best possible results for our customers.

Our aim is to deliver stable, resilient and high quality code, that is why testing is another key quality we look for when expanding our team. We use Espresso to write our UI/E2E Test and JUnit to write our Unit Tests across all layers of the application, as well as manually test all features before they go into production.

We also work closely with QA engineers to ensure we have an additional level of testing when working on complex feature delivery.

The Android world At Engine, we are proud to be working with some of the latest technologies in the industry. When adopting new technologies we always consider as a team whether it’s the best choice for our product and our users.

We are currently in the process of building a number of SDKs for our clients utilising the modules we’ve already created in the Starling UK App. We’ll be using these to support the development of an app in Romania with Salt Bank and build an entirely new banking app for one of our partners in Australia called AMP Bank, a really exciting opportunity!

In the Engine SDKs we generally aim to use the latest technology as our clients would expect, but, we also rely heavily on the existing Starling codebase which uses some older libraries too, so you’ll need a good understanding of a wide range of libraries and technologies.

We use Dagger, Realm, Retrofit, Coil, Compose, Coroutines and Compose, but there’s still a lot of work to do migrating from XML layouts and RxJava2.

Building SDKs that we plan to launch internationally can present some new challenges, so if you’ve ever had experience maintaining a library, contributing to OSS, or have dealt with Internationalisation we’d love to hear about it.

If that’s all new to you, don’t worry, we’re learning too!

We want our app to look great for the Android platform and have worked closely with our designers to set up a component library and have themed our app accordingly.

Feature parity is important to us so Android and iOS apps are often built alongside each other.

As a team we meet together every week to talk through pain points and potential improvements we’ll like to make to the project.

We regularly meet in real life to attend conferences and meet-ups together too!

Senior Software Engineer - Database Platform - Engine by Starling

At Engine by Starling, we're seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our Cross Cutting Engineering team. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play a crucial role in building and maintaining the reliable, scalable, and maintainable infrastructure and tooling that powers our entire software delivery pipeline.

Our mission is to build the software layer that makes the 'human-in-the-loop' obsolete and empower our technology teams to operate their own databases. We're forming a new team to lead a multi-year roadmap focused on the development and evolution of two critical proprietary products:

Database Manager: Our central orchestration platform and control plane.

Replication Manager: Our bespoke logical replication service.

Your goal is to ensure that, as we onboard more global clients, our database infrastructure remains stable, resilient, and autonomous.

Key Responsibilities:

Scale for Multi-Tenancy: Design and develop Java-based services within Database Manager to manage an ever-growing number of isolated database estates for our SaaS clients.

Evolve Replication Manager: Enhance our data streaming orchestration to ensure 'Zero-Downtime' transitions and migrations are seamless across a global footprint.

Architect Cross-Cloud Portability: Work with cloud native solutions to build a database layer that is cloud-agnostic, allowing Engine to deploy reliably across different providers.

Eliminate Manual Toil: Build high-level abstractions for complex maintenance tasks, ensuring the system proactively heals and maintains itself.

Execute a Multi-Year Roadmap: Contribute to the long-term technical strategy of how Engine handles mission-critical data at a global scale.

Requirements:

A Software Engineer First: You have deep expertise in Java working with JDBC, and enjoy building robust, testable, and maintainable backend services.

Distributed Systems Enthusiast: You are excited by the challenge of 'multi-everything'- multi-tenant, multi-region, and multi-cloud.

PostgreSQL & Kubernetes Interest: You understand (or want to learn) the internals of Postgres and how to run it natively on Kubernetes.

Systems Thinker: You have a natural 'reluctance for manual implementation' and believe that infrastructure should be managed via code and APIs.

A Security Mindset: Security is paramount when it comes to the storage and handling of data - we do not allow DBAs or engineers access to production data.

Benefits:

33 days holiday (including public holidays, which you can take when it works best for you)

An extra day's holiday for your birthday

Annual leave is increased with length of service, and you can choose to buy or sell up to five extra days off

16 hours paid volunteering time a year

Salary sacrifice, company enhanced pension scheme

Life insurance at 4x your salary & group income protection

Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care.

Partner benefits include discounts with Waitrose, Mr&Mrs Smith and Peloton

As a Cloud Security Software Engineer at Engine by Starling, you will be a hands-on builder responsible for the security architecture of our multi-tenant core banking platform. You'll spend your days architecting and writing Go-based tooling, automating defenses, and ensuring our infrastructure across AWS and GCP is secure by design and compliant by default.

Your mission is to solve complex security problems through software engineering, focusing on three core pillars:

Cloud Security Software Engineer

Job Description:

About Engineering at Engine by Starling

At Engine by Starling, we don't do 'checkbox security',we build security software. We treat security as a first-class engineering discipline, where the solution to a threat isn't a policy, but a robust, concurrent system written in Go.

As a Cloud Security Software Engineer, you will be a hands-on builder responsible for the security architecture of our multi-tenant core banking platform. You'll spend your days architecting and writing Go-based tooling, automating defenses, and ensuring our infrastructure across AWS and GCP is secure by design and compliant by default.

The Mission

Your mission is to solve complex security problems through software engineering, focusing on three core pillars:

Identity & Network Security: Engineering high-performance IAM controls and zero-trust network architectures. You will lead the way in refining edge-defense strategies and trust redirection, ensuring every request is verified and encrypted at scale.

Unified Vulnerability Orchestration: Architecting a custom 'single pane of glass' for security data. You will build Go-based API integrations and microservices that bridge scanning engines, dependency trackers, and internal portals into a seamless, automated ecosystem.

Compliance as Code: Building the automated systems that provide real-time evidence for frameworks like SOC 2, ISO 27001 & PCI. You’ll ensure we stay compliant through continuous, automated validation rather than manual overhead.

The Team

You will be a key member of our growing Security Engineering team, working at the intersection of Infrastructure, Cross-Cutting, and GRC. We operate like a specialized product team: we identify security friction and build the software to eliminate it. You won’t work in a silo; you’ll collaborate with engineers across the business to deliver a platform that is resilient by default.

About You

We are looking for Software Engineers who are passionate about the Go ecosystem and want to apply those skills to mission-critical security challenges. Whether you come from a Security Engineering background or you are a Backend Engineer with a 'security-first' mindset, we value your ability to write clean, maintainable, and efficient code.

What you’ll get to do

Engineering Security Tooling: Lead the design and maintenance of our internal security tool suite, written primarily in Go, to automate evidence collection and real-time remediation of security alerts.

Infrastructure as Code: Write and peer-review Terraform and custom providers to manage identity and core infrastructure across AWS and GCP.
