Member of Technical Staff (Design Systems)

Perplexity is looking for a frontend engineer to build the design system behind every Perplexity product. It is the component library and design language shared across web, iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows – the primitives, tokens, and interaction patterns that every product team builds on top of.

Its users are internal, spanning product teams and a broad range of contributors across the company. The components you build become the foundation all of them rely on. You will develop component APIs that hold up across dozens of consuming surfaces and are easy for other teams to adopt correctly, contribute to the token pipeline that keeps five platforms visually consistent, and maintain a high bar for interaction quality and accessibility.

Responsibilities

Design and build core primitives – overlays, inputs, navigation, feedback – with APIs that stay coherent as consumers multiply

Work across the design-token pipeline – authoring, generation, and per-platform publishing across web, iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows

Partner directly with design on the design language itself, translating Figma systems into typed, testable, documented components

Migrate product surfaces off bespoke implementations onto shared primitives without breaking them

Build accessible components by default – keyboard, focus, contrast, screen readers – backed by automated coverage

Support consuming teams through docs, visual regression coverage, and on-call rotation

Requirements

4+ years building production frontend; experience with a design system, component library, or shared UI platform is a plus

Interest in building reusable components

Strong React and TypeScript, and CSS

Working accessibility knowledge (WCAG, ARIA patterns, assistive tech)

Comfort collaborating closely with designers on the visual and interaction language

Compensation

$220K – $405K • Offers Equity

Benefits

Full-time U.S. employees enjoy a comprehensive benefits program including equity, health, dental, vision, retirement, fitness, commuter and dependent care accounts, and more.

Full-time employees outside the U.S. enjoy a comprehensive benefits program tailored to their region of residence.

About this Team

The HR Business Partner (HRBP) team at OpenAI partners with leaders to navigate complex organizational and talent decisions where the right path is not always obvious. We are building a higher-leverage HRBP model: staying close enough to the business to understand its realities, while focusing our time on the work that requires judgment, influence, context, and leadership partnership.

About this Role

This role is part of a shared hiring pathway for HRBPs at OpenAI. Instead of hiring directly for a single team, we evaluate candidates holistically first, then identify the best fit across our organization as you advance. This approach ensures alignment between your skills, interests, and where our needs are greatest, whether that’s partnering with technical leaders in engineering, supporting product teams driving user impact, or enabling operational excellence across business functions.

As a Senior HR Business Partner, you’ll be a trusted advisor to leaders and their teams. You’ll help set direction for how we organize, grow, and lead, stepping in as both a sounding board and a problem-solver. This role mixes strategic advising with hands-on support: you’ll design better systems, coach managers through complex situations, and help us make trade-offs that keep our people and mission in balance. This is an individual contributor role reporting to an HRBP Lead.

In this role, you will:

Shape high-performing, resilient teams: Partner with leaders to design structures, talent plans, and ways of working that enable strong performance and sustainable growth.

Collaborate for a seamless experience: Partner with fellow HRBPs, COEs, and cross-functional leaders to build an employee experience rooted in humanity, humility, and impact.

Evolve People programs: Strengthen performance, engagement, and retention processes, building solutions that are lightweight, scalable, and aligned with how OpenAI operates.

Guide and develop managers: Offer candid, actionable feedback and help managers build leadership muscle across their teams.

Anticipate and act fast: Stay close to the business to identify challenges early, diagnose root causes, and deliver lasting solutions that adapt as priorities shift.

Lead change that matters: Drive organizational changes with empathy, clarity, and rigor, finding creative paths forward when playbooks don’t exist.

You might thrive in this role if you have:

Deep HRBP expertise: 7–10+ years of HR experience, including at least 5 years as an HR Business Partner in high-growth or complex environments.

Strategic partnering: Able to see the big picture, guide leaders through tough trade-offs, and adapt quickly when priorities shift.

Multipliers who create impact: Skilled at giving candid feedback with care and building leadership capabilities across organizations.

Scrappy problem solving: Uses sound judgment to diagnose challenges, test creative solutions, and chart a path forward without a playbook.

Change leadership with calm & clarity: Brings steadiness, empathy, and influence in moments of ambiguity or transition.

High integrity: Known for discretion, fairness, and trustworthiness when the stakes are high.

Workplace & Location

This role is based in our San Francisco, New York, or Seattle office, and we aren’t considering remote applications at this time. We do encourage you to apply even if you prefer a fully remote role as location factors may change over time.

We offer relocation support to new employees, and we use a hybrid model: three days in the office per week with optional work from home on Thursdays and Fridays.

About OpenAI

OpenAI is an AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. We push the boundaries of the capabilities of AI systems and seek to safely deploy them to the world through our products. AI is an extremely powerful tool that must be created with safety and human needs at its core, and to achieve our mission, we must encompass and value the many different perspectives, voices, and experiences that form the full spectrum of humanity.

We are an equal opportunity employer, and we do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, veteran status, disability, genetic information, or other applicable legally protected characteristic.

About the Team

Security is at the foundation of OpenAI’s mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.

About the Role

As a Security Engineer on Detection & Response, you’ll help protect OpenAI’s most sensitive assets– including our intellectual property, customer data, and the infrastructure that supports them– by building and operating the systems we use to detect suspicious activity and respond effectively when it matters. You’ll work across endpoints, identity, cloud, hyperscale compute infrastructure, and datacenter-adjacent layers, partnering closely with security teams and infrastructure owners to define the telemetry and response requirements we need and building tooling and automation where it delivers the most leverage.

In this role, you will:

Build and evolve Detection & Response capabilities across OpenAI’s infrastructure, products, and research environments, with an emphasis on high-signal detection and reliable operational response.

Engineer detection pipelines and tooling: develop rule lifecycle management, measurement/quality loops (coverage, precision, latency), tuning processes, and safe rollout patterns.

Automate response and investigations by building workflows that reduce toil (triage, enrichment, containment, evidence capture) and improve time-to-understand/time-to-contain.

Partner with other Security teams and system/infrastructure owners across the company to ensure new systems ship with the right telemetry, threat models, and response playbooks from day one.

Define D&R requirements and drive visibility across endpoints, identity, SaaS, cloud, Kubernetes: identify telemetry/control gaps, prioritize them, and advocate for fixes with partner teams (and implement directly when it’s the fastest/most effective path).

Evaluate and respond to emergent security concerns in a frontier AI lab environment, such as detection and response strategies for agents operating across infrastructure at scale.

You might thrive in this role if you:

Have hands-on threat detection and/or incident response experience, including building detections, running investigations, and improving operational playbooks.

Understand modern adversary tradecraft (TTPs) and can translate it into practical detection strategies and response actions.

Bring a threat modeling mindset. You can evaluate new infrastructure or features, identify D&R implications (what could go wrong, what we’d need to see, how we’d respond), and turn that into concrete requirements for teams shipping the system.

Have experience working in Kubernetes/containerized environments, including building detections from cluster telemetry and understanding common failure and attack modes (workloads, nodes, control plane, networking).

Are comfortable reasoning about lower-level infrastructure and datacenter risks, such as firmware/BMC surfaces, network segmentation/telemetry, and hard-to-observe control paths.

Have experience across major cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP, OCI), and can design cloud-agnostic detection approaches where possible.

Like building automation that replaces repetitive D&R work, including thoughtfully using agent-style workflows where they meaningfully reduce toil, while keeping outcomes measurable, auditable, and safe.

Are energized by new problem areas at a forward-leaning technology company: e.g., thinking through how to detect and respond to agents operating across systems at scale, and turning those ideas into pragmatic telemetry and response requirements.

Communicate clearly and collaborate well across teams. You can translate D&R needs into clear requirements, align stakeholders, and drive follow-through across technical and non-technical audiences.

Are comfortable with scripting and enjoy using AI/agent tooling to accelerate investigations and automation—more “directing” than doing everything by hand.
